Behind the Scenes at TNV Plastics

South Africa’s Largest Manufacturer of High Quality Upholstery and Automotive Vinyl
Most people see vinyl when it is already finished wrapped around a car seat, fitted to a restaurant booth or transformed into a piece of furniture.
But before it gets there, there is an entire manufacturing process happening behind the scenes.
Welcome inside the TNV Plastics factory, where raw materials, colour, machinery and experience come together to produce high-quality upholstery and automotive vinyl right here in South Africa.

From Raw Material to production
Every roll of vinyl begins with the materials that go into it.
Before manufacturing starts, the raw materials are received, stored and carefully prepared for production. Each component has a specific role in the final material, so organisation and consistency at this stage are essential.
The materials are then measured and prepared according to the requirements of the production run before being moved into the mixing process. This is where the foundation is set for the vinyl’s colour, flexibility, finish and overall performance.
Good preparation also helps keep production running efficiently. Having the correct materials ready at the right time allows each stage of the manufacturing process to move smoothly and consistently.
Where Colour Comes to Life
The prepared raw materials are moved into the mixing area, where specialised machinery combines the components needed for each vinyl.
Colour pigments are added according to the production requirements, helping achieve the correct shade and consistency before the material moves onto the production line.
This stage plays an important role in creating a uniform finish across the final product.
Much of the equipment in this area also carries the distinctive TNV green, making it one of the most recognisable parts of the factory.

From Liquid to Vinyl
This is where the material begins to take shape.
Once the raw materials have been prepared, mixed and brought to the required colour and consistency, the liquid formulation is transferred to the production line.
Here, the mixture is carefully introduced into the manufacturing process so that it can move through the next stages in a controlled and consistent way. At this point, the material still looks very different from the finished upholstery or automotive vinyl most customers recognise.
Consistency is especially important at this stage. The way the material is prepared and fed into production helps influence the quality, appearance and performance of the finished surface.

Into the Vinyl Oven
The material then travels through the factory’s large production oven.
Here, carefully controlled heat transforms the liquid material into the strong, flexible vinyl surface that will eventually be used in cars, furniture, commercial seating and countless other applications.
Watching the material move through this stage gives you a very different appreciation for a finished roll of vinyl.
What looks simple on the outside is the result of a carefully controlled manufacturing process.

Quality Control: The Final Check
Before the vinyl is approved as a finished product, it passes through the TNV quality control department.
Here, the team checks the material for surface quality, texture, consistency and overall finish, making sure the vinyl meets the required standard before it moves on.
TNV’s quality control department is led by a dedicated team of women who inspect the finished material before it leaves production

The Final Stage of Production
Once the vinyl has passed through production and quality control, it moves into the final stage of the manufacturing process.
The material is wound into large rolls, checked and prepared for handling, storage and distribution.
At this point, the transformation is complete what began as raw materials has become finished TNV vinyl, ready for use in automotive interiors, furniture, hospitality seating, commercial upholstery and other applications.
From here, the finished rolls are ready to leave the factory and move on to their next purpose.

We Don’t Just Sell Vinyl. We Make It.
There’s something different about knowing exactly where a product comes from.
At TNV Plastics, vinyl isn’t simply something we stock and sell.
We manufacture it.
From raw material preparation and colour mixing to production, quality control and the finished roll, every stage gives us a deeper understanding of the material our customers rely on.
That experience matters when supplying upholsterers, automotive trimmers, manufacturers and businesses across South Africa.
It means we know the product from the manufacturing process through to the final application.
